Description

PEM Hydrogen Electrolyser

A PEM hydrogen electrolyser is a device that uses electricity to convert water into hydrogen gas. Consider it this way: the device separates the water into hydrogen and oxygen when clean water is added and plugged in. The hydrogen is gathered, and the oxygen is released. Since there is no smoke or pollution produced during use, this hydrogen can subsequently be used as a clean fuel. The unique component inside the machine that aids in the safe and effective separation of hydrogen from oxygen is called a proton exchange membrane, or PEM.

What Happens Inside a PEM Hydrogen Electrolyser?

  1. Electricity goes in
    The electrolyser is connected to a power supply (solar, wind, battery, or grid electricity).

  2. Water is added
    Clean water (purified or distilled) flows into the system.

  3. Splitting water molecules
    Inside the electrolyser is a thin special film called the PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane).
    Electricity forces the water (H₂O) molecules to split apart:

    • At the anode (+): Water breaks into oxygen gas (O₂), protons (H⁺), and electrons (e⁻).

    • At the cathode (–): The protons (H⁺) travel through the PEM membrane and combine with electrons to form hydrogen gas (H₂).

  4. Outputs

    • Hydrogen gas (H₂): Collected and stored as clean fuel.

    • Oxygen gas (O₂): Released into the air (or captured if needed).

🧪 The Chemical Reaction.

At the Anode (+):

2H2O→O2+4H++4e−2H₂O → O₂ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻

At the Cathode (–):

4H++4e−→2H24H⁺ + 4e⁻ → 2H₂

Overall Reaction:

2H2O→2H2+O22H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂
